Rising damp: understanding how water travels through a wall

Damp marks at the base of two walls

A stain near the floor does not identify the cause on its own. Rising damp describes water moving through porous materials in contact with damp ground.

Before choosing equipment, prepare a plan and dated photographs. Humidistop provides product pages and instructions so you can examine the reference and positioning before purchase. If the moisture cause remains uncertain, clarify it before deciding on treatment and identify any independent repairs still needed.

Look at the building as a whole

Mark the affected areas on a floor plan and compare accessible sides of the wall. Record internal and external ground levels, previous alterations and nearby pipes. Peeling paint, salts and smells are clues to put together. Leaks, penetrating damp and condensation can overlap, so an isolated photograph is not enough to select a product. Keep a chronology as well as close-up pictures.

Move from observations to a project

Before considering an ATE or ATG device, clarify which source of moisture is being addressed. Compare the model, instructions and coverage diameter with the plan. Installing a device does not repair a leaking pipe or correct an unrelated ventilation problem. Keep dated photographs of the same places to follow the condition of the materials before replacing finishes.

Before you decide

  • Document the walls and possible water sources.
  • Check the model and installation instructions.
  • Separate fitting, monitoring and reinstatement of finishes.

A practical question

Do white salts confirm rising damp?

Not on their own. They need to be considered alongside the materials, possible water sources and the history of the building.

The range includes mains-powered ATE LC15, ATE LC30, ATE LC30 PULSE and ATE MAX, alongside ATG LC15 and ATG LC30 without electricity. The devices are manufactured in Castres, France. Compare the diameter with the building layout and follow the instructions. The manufacturer’s 10-year warranty applies under its conditions. The device does not replace independent interventions on leaks, penetrating water or ventilation.
